The Future of Tech: Predictions for 2024

When my wife and I moved to New York City in 2001, recently graduated from college and newly wed, we were eager to find friends. We knew nearly no one but were sure we’d soon find a fun-loving group like the 20- and 30-something New Yorkers who spontaneously dropped in on one another on TV shows like 

We hatched a plan. After moving into our Midtown Manhattan apartment, we invited all the neighbors over for drinks by placing Kinko’s-printed quarter-sheets into everyone’s mailboxes. Then, we waited for our versions of Chandler, Kramer, and Elaine to show up. But they didn’t. In fact, no one did. As the ice in the cooler melted and the guacamole browned, not a single person among 100 apartments stopped by. Not. One. Person.

Recalling that episode now, we sound embarrassingly naïve. We didn’t realize friendships in the real world worked nothing like the ones we had forged in our dormitories, let alone those we saw on television. Yet as it turns out, our desire to belong to a tight community was far from foolish.

Recent studies have shown a dearth of social interaction with people you care about and who care about you not only leads to loneliness, but is also linked to a range of harmful physical effects. In other words: A lack of close friendships may be hazardous to your health.

 reviewed 148 studies involving over 300,000 participants and concluded that having weak social ties was as harmful to health as being an alcoholic and twice as harmful as obesity. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, co-author of the analysis, told Reuters, “A lack of social relationships was equivalent to smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day.”

Proceedings the National Academy of Sciences

, found a biological response to loneliness that triggers disease. According to the researchers, social isolation sets off a cellular chain reaction that increases inflammation and suppresses the body’s immune response.

Perhaps the most compelling evidence that friendships affect longevity comes from the ongoing 

. Since 1938, researchers have been following 724 men, tracking their physical health as well as social habits. Robert Waldinger, the study’s current director, said in his recent 

, “The clearest message that we get from this 75-year study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.” Socially disconnected people are, according to Waldinger, “less happy, their health declines earlier in midlife, their brain functioning declines sooner, and they live shorter lives than people who are not lonely.”

Lest we think having 500 Facebook friends might offer some protection, Waldinger warns, “It’s not just the number of friends you have … it’s the quality of your close relationships that matters.”

So what makes for a quality friendship? William Rawlins, a professor of interpersonal communications at Ohio University who studies the way people interact over the course of their lives, 

 that satisfying friendships need three things: “Somebody to talk to, someone to depend on, and someone to enjoy.”

Finding someone to talk to, depend on, and enjoy comes naturally when we’re young. In college, for example, we build strong bonds when nearly everyone around us is also searching for connection. But as we grow into adulthood, the model for how to maintain our friendships isn’t clear. We graduate and go our separate ways, pursuing careers and starting lives miles apart from our best friends.

Suddenly work obligations and ambitions trump buddies and brewskis. It becomes impossible to be spontaneous without planning for weeks, if not months, in advance. Once children enter the picture, exhilarating nights on the town become exhausted nights on the couch.

Unfortunately, the less time we invest in people, the easier it is to make do without them, until one day it becomes too awkward to reconnect. “Since we haven’t spoken for so long,” we think, “where would we even begin? If we were still close friends wouldn’t we have spoken more by now?”

This is how friendships die — they starve to death. But as the research reveals, by allowing those friendships to starve, we’re also malnourishing our bodies.

Case in point: Several months ago, I found myself in a funk. I now live in San Francisco and whenever someone asked, “How are you?” my reply was the standard Silicon Valley yuppie salute: “Good! Super busy!” Yet this wasn’t exactly true. I wasn’t good.

To put things in perspective, I wasn’t bad, either. Things were fine. By all measures, more than fine — I had a healthy family, a growing business, and interesting clients to work with. I’d recently published 

 that became a Wall Street Journal best seller, and if my social media stats were to be believed, I had plenty of friends and followers.

And yet, the funk. I soon identified the problem: The more professional opportunities came my way, the more time I spent away from my real-life friends — the people I truly cared about. Maintaining friendships with people to talk to, depend on, and enjoy takes time.

As an undergraduate, I first heard the term “residual benefactor” in an economics class. A residual benefactor is the chump who gets whatever is left over when a company is liquidated — typically, not much. When we’re not careful, the people we care about often become residual benefactors: We leave them for last, giving them whatever bits of time are left over after we’ve attended to everything else.

If the food of friendship is time together, how do we make the time to ensure we’re all fed? My friends and I have recently come across a way to keep each other close. It fits into our lifestyles despite busy schedules and a surfeit of children. We call it the “kibbutz.”

In Hebrew, the word means “gathering,” and for our gathering, four couples meet every two weeks to talk about one question — sort of like an interactive TED Talk over a picnic lunch. The question might range from a deep inquiry, like “What’s one thing your parents taught you that you want to pass on to your children?” to a lighter, more practical question, like “How do you disconnect from your iPhone on weekends?”

Having a topic helps in two ways. For one, it gets us past the small talk of sports and weather, and helps us open up about stuff that actually matters. Second, it prevents the gender split that happens when couples convene in groups — men in one corner, women in another. The question of the day gets us all talking together.

Every other week, rain or shine, the kibbutz is on our calendars — consistency is key. There’s no back-and-forth emailing to find a time. We always meet at the same place, and each couple brings their own food so there’s no prep or cleanup. If one couple can’t make it, no biggie, the others carry on the conversation.

What about the kids? In our group, kids are welcome, but they don’t run the show. Typically they play on their own, but if they interject, they’re given a stern response that sounds something like: “I’m having a conversation with my friends because my friends are important to me. You’re welcome to listen or join the conversation, but please don’t interrupt unless it’s an emergency.”

For our children’s sake, we want them to know that adult friendships matter. We don’t want them to have to rely on TV to figure out how adults interact. By watching us, our children see that being a good friend means listening when others have something to share, and not being distracted by anything else — including our cellphones, the football game, or even our own children (unless someone is bleeding).

The entire affair lasts about two hours, and I always leave the kibbutz with new ideas and insights. Most important, I feel closer to my friends. No, our group isn’t as funny or spontaneous as the pseudo-New Yorkers I grew up watching on TV. But it turns out that fun wasn’t what I was missing — it was authentic, caring friendships.

Not only that, it turns out the time I spend with my friends is also an investment in my future health. Forget diets and the latest workout routines. The best medicine may be to gather your favorite people around a table and make a toast: “To friendship, and your health.”

Studies show adult friendships have a significant impact on our happiness and well-being.

Committing to my “kibbutz” has had the biggest impact on my happiness over the past year. Here’s how our group works, but the lessons can apply to any adult friendship:

Book the time – Reserve time on your calendar for the foreseeable future so there’s no guesswork or scheduling headaches about when you’ll see each other again. Our group meets every two weeks.

Go deep – Talking about a meaningful topic strengthens your bonds. Get past the shallow small talk. In our group, a different member brings the question of the day to each meeting.

Don’t let kids derail you – Children benefit from seeing you model a healthy adult friendship. Tell the kids they can listen or participate, but they can’t interrupt unless it’s an emergency.

Happiness Hack: This One Ritual Made Me Much Happier

This kind of groping is a problem in many countries. In certain places, like Latin America, they have made 

 because women feel so unsafe on a crowded metro with men.

Yet segregating train cars by gender won’t solve the issue. Those butts are not the problem. The more significant issue is the lack of societal pressures stopping men from behaving this way.

The man who grabbed my butt didn’t think twice about it.

I wasn’t in public, exactly. I was in the back room at my job, where they kept the lockers and aprons for the staff. It was there, in this semi-private space, that I found myself alone with a male coworker.

“Hey, can you turn around for a second?”

He sounded so blasé, I was sure I had something on my pants. The dangers of public transportation are many and sometimes unpleasant, so I expected that perhaps a stray hair or piece of gum had followed me from the bus to the restaurant.

But even if I hadn’t taken the bus, my next thought probably would have been that my coworker had found a stain on his white shirt and had to change, as was the policy, and thus desired some privacy. In my naiveté, I didn’t assume he would do anything out of the ordinary. So I turned around.

That’s when I felt a pair of hands on my rear, each palm insistently cupping one of my ass cheeks.

I’m ashamed to say I froze. I was a 20-year-old who had never experienced inappropriate touching before. I didn’t know how to respond. My first reaction was to think that maybe I was imagining it.

But no, this was no bad dream or mistake. Those hands kneaded and squeezed my ass for what felt like an hour, though I’m sure it was only a few seconds.

“Beautiful,” he whispered, far too close to my ear for comfort. “Where did you get an ass like this?”

I was numb but automatically responded, “Um…from my…mom.”

And then I ran, because I was scared, and didn’t know what to do.

Part of me wanted to believe it was harmless. An even more messed up part of my brain argued that it was a compliment since he found me attractive. Was this how other adults behaved when they were flirting?

The desire to forget it had happened replaced all my thoughts. I knew the server’s actions were wrong. But my main concern was to not get fired, and I had no proof that he’d touched me.

When push came to shove, I wasn’t sure anyone would believe me, and I didn’t want to be labeled a problem by the management.

I could avoid being in the same room with the abuser but couldn’t easily find a new job.

So, I kept quiet and limited my contact with him to brisk communication if work required me to do so. For three months, this was how things were. I ignored the slightly sick feeling I had in my stomach during that time.

However, later, I would be aware that residual fear remained. I didn’t feel safe anymore with any of my male coworkers. Even though they were all seemingly lovely men, I feared they could turn at any moment and view me as a target.

Things took a turn for the better three months later. While working the morning shift with two other female coworkers, I saw him arrive too early for lunch. A manager came out immediately and told him to follow her into the office.

Once he had passed our table, the woman across from me whispered, “That guy’s a creep. I hope he gets fired. He has been harassing a bunch of the waitresses.”

To my great delight, he was fired. But the feeling of safety I’d had before never fully returned. Guilt also flooded me. I hadn’t been as courageous as my coworkers. Was I a part of the problem?

Were all of us that he had harassed kept quiet about the problem? If so, were we equal or more to blame than the person committing the crime in the first place? These are the kind of disturbing thoughts that you can have when you don’t realize how common your predicament and actions are.

From what I gathered later, he’d been a creep to several other women, who slowly realized they were not the only ones. That knowledge that they were not alone gave them the strength to go to the bosses, knowing they were more likely to be believed because of their numbers, which is more than a little messed up when you think about it.

Abusers know this, so they often tell their victims to keep things a secret while threatening their safety. Their actions thrive when isolating those they wish to keep quiet.

This experience was not the last time a man grabbed me. Not that I’m alone. So many women have experienced the same at work, on the streets, in the metro, in schools, or anywhere. If you ask around, you’ll hear stories from women who’ve been harassed. If you pay attention, you’ll see men who make women uncomfortable in public.

But our voices are getting more robust, and men are starting to understand the consequences of treating women like objects.

In December 2019, a runner was accused of 

 while reporting live during a race in Georgia.

How could she not? You could see that look on her face, the one where it takes a moment to realize that someone else sees you as a thing, that brought fury to so many because it reminded them of all the times they had been groped with no camera around to catch their perpetrators.

The man’s hollow excuses to get out of the responsibility were infuriating, as were those who defended his actions by saying, 

claiming to have been caught up in the moment

. He didn't’ see why it was such a big deal. However the age of casual sexism which would have supported him 50 years ago, was over. It was as if the nation said, “Yes, it was a big deal.”

It’s probably the same reason there was such glee over the video of a waitress body-slamming a patron who decided he could casually grab her ass in her place of work. Fifty percent of the comments said something to the effect of, “I wish I would have done that when someone grabbed me.”

We want our bodies to be ours in public spaces.

Can we read on the subway while wearing a skirt without the risk of someone trying to snap a photo of our va*gina just because they can? Is it possible to go for a run without someone making a lewd remark if our breasts jiggle a bit?

And why are we still telling women that they should smile?

It’s time to be clear that we are not things for anyone’s pleasure. The culture is changing.

Social media and access to a large audience are instrumental in holding people who misbehave accountable, and those who might do the same realize no one will tolerate their actions.

Maybe next time someone sees a man trying to put a phone under a woman’s skirt, they’ll say something. Or if some dude is rubbing his crotch against a girl on a crowded subway, she won’t be too embarrassed to cause a scene.

She should know others will aid her and help keep the pervert separated from her and other potential victims. Anyone who sees a man grab a woman’s ass should call them out or support the woman if she demands an apology.

A slap on the butt is not a compliment. A random groping does not make a woman feel sexy. No one deserves a pinch on a thigh because a skirt exposed it.

These are actions certain men take to demonstrate their power in a world that has allowed them to get away with this behavior for too long.

All I know is that next time a man grabs my butt, I hope I won’t be silent. Next time someone else sees a man assaulting a woman, I hope they won’t be silent either.
